What is FIRST?

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering.

The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of students and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions designed by Dean Kamen of DECA and Woodie Flowers of MIT. The Competition has grown to more than 3000 teams competing in over 40 Regional Events, and The Championship Event held at Reliant Park in Houston where more than 20,000 students participate.

FIRST redefines winning for these students. Teams are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.

FIRST is the SUPERBOWL OF SMARTS In today’s society many kids think that to make it “BIG” they must be a star athlete or actor. Dean Kamen decided to break this stereotype and give kids insight on what is really important Students can design, build and program robots. Students will THINK, CREATE, AND INSPIRE!! They will also learn GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM.
